Someone Else's Term project presentation

The project I would like to talk about is Davinder’s project on social networking and purposeful loss of privacy. In her presentation, she tell about the social networking are sites that individual use to interact and communicate with one another. She gave more details about the social networking. She thought Users should create a limited profile and use the privacy setting, so they have more control on their personal information. Also avoid posting everything online because once its posted online, its public and anyone can access to it now and in the future. She gave example to us, about the facebook, she thought social networking is a great tool to stay in touch with your friends and family but you have to be careful about what you post. Social networks are great fun and can be advantageous but people really need to understand that its complicated world and you need to step wisely. I feel her presentation is very clear, many details to support her topic, and two interesting videos from youtube bring us greatest happiness.

About My Term Project

My topic of presentation is “The Impact of New Media in China”, about the positive and negative impact of new media. Before I talk about the positive and negative effects, I told the statistics of the internet users and ratio of male and female user, and their activities. Then, I talked about the positive impact on new media in “communication” about email, cell phone, blog, online diary, and QQ and how these affect Chinese people and how it’s socializing, and i spent few time to introduce the QQ, QQ similar to MSN, both of them have space, IM, email, viedo camara, and so on. the difference is QQ have QQ Pet and QQ music. Then continued to education aspect and followed by business (www.taobao.com) -the famous website for online shopping and entertainment. After I talked about the positive effects then I talked about the negative effects. In communication aspect, a lot of people got hacked by email hackers. In business, many people selling illegal things online. Followed by the entertainment aspect and how kids are addicting to the video games and follow the scene in the game. At the end, I mentioned about the solution of the negative effects.

Our Class WiKi- So Far

In the contribution to our class wiki, I added new contents into New Media in Politics pages. I created a new page about the alternative media sources in New Media in US political. There are 4 main alternative media sources, such as Alternative news services, Alternative television networks, Alternative television programs, and Alternative radio programs. I provide some details to support each alternative media programs. I also edit about The World Wide Web and the accompanying explosion in “new media” has forced an upheaval in U.S. politics, and I list four areas, 1) Innovative ways to reach voters, 2) A radically changed news system, 3) An unprecedented flood of small donors, 4) Newly empowered interest groups on the left and the right.

The Next New Thing

Because of developing country or developed country, there are a lot of new inventions coming out, such as internet, since internet is really important tools to people use for their work, so if they lose the important files from the hacker’s attack. It will cause them spend extra time to do it again. There are many more problems that the hackers do. This is why I hope in the future we’ll have a computer that allows you to know if your computer is being hacked and by who and it will automatically block the hacker and report the police. Let say that if someone’s hacking a computer, it will report wirelessly and automatically to the owner of the computer (by text message) and to the police to let you know that you're being hacked. The owner and the police have the access to hacker’s information to find out what IP address it is and who owns or who uses it.

Privacy and Confidentiality

According to research, Privacy means the right of individuals to hold information about themselves in secret, free from the knowledge of others; such as how much you have in your bank accounts. And Confidentiality means the assurance that information about identifiable persons, the release of which would constitute an invasion of privacy for any individual, will not be disclosed without consent except as allowed by law; such as commercial secrets. In new media, such as Facebook, you have to enter a correct user name and password to open your page, if you have forgotten your username and password, you will be asked to provide proof to prove you are user. I think this is confidential information, because anyone can’t open your account since they don’t have correct password. However, you can choose friends to see or comment on your facebook wall, but only your friends can see your information. I think this could be privacy information.

Advice to Baruch College

If I was hired by Baruch College to use new media to improve the College, First, I would suggest create more online education opportunity, Currently, we have a couple of mixed online & offline classes. Since we are living in busy daily life, it will provide more educational opportunity if creates more online courses. Second, I suggest Online Tutorial. We have a great tutorial service in campus, but they provide their service within 9:00 AM~ 8:00 PM. It’s still not enough time for people have class or job. I think if they provide these videos online. It will help student to improve their academic performance. The third, The College should have a system where each student can set up a list of classes that includes the correct number of credits for graduation. So each student can have checklist of what they took already and what still needs to be taken.

My New Media Class - So Far

There are few new technologies that can be considering new media. One of the biggest one is probably the World Wide Web and all the networks within it. Billions of people visit the Internet on a daily basis. People can interact with each other within seconds across networks (AIM, virtual worlds, & social networks). The Internet is very important to new media. It allows easy access to all kinds of information and information can be easily changed or added. Like in the reading "IBM Learning Programs Get a 'SecondLife'" it talks about how people who are employed can change information about themselves and even their avatars. Their avatars can have anything they want but when it comes to some kind of serious meeting with the online avatars you can easily change their clothing and other things to make them less distracting to other people. In the article "What's Next? Your Future in Social Networking" Chuck Hamilton said "Virtual worlds are quickly becoming a powerful tool and a driving force to what many are calling the 3D Internet – one that is open, immersive, innovative, and social." It also shows New Media become so important. New media is enhancing old media in both positive and negative ways. On a positive side, people are improving their quality of life. With new technologies, people are able to work on tasks faster and effectively. On negative part, people take advantage of new technologies and take easy way out of everything, and being lazy.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Now a day, I think social networks and virtual worlds became one of the many necessities for online users. People use social networks and virtual worlds to communicate with others and expand self-interest. A virtual world is very useful in our daily life. A person can meet someone just by adding a friend on Facebook or MySpace and talk or interact by sitting in front of a computer screen. Business people use virtual worlds to training their employees, and get information through connection of another worker. According to the article “IBM Learning Programs Get a Second Life" by Ed Frauenheim, he shows us corporate like “IBM” are using virtual worlds to their employees’ training. It definitely helps new employees’ shares ideas with others before their first day of work.
There are some beneficial factors to using virtual worlds. People are allow to expand their imagination and explore places things you want to do in real life. People are free to do so much with their dreams in the virtual world then in reality.
Of course everything has a dark side, include of virtual world. The main thing about them is they can be fake. People should careful about who they meet and what kinds of information share each other. If we met the wrong person via the internet that might make people go through the wrong way or bad situation.
I believe that in the future virtual worlds will evolve more in our life. Everybody will sit in front of their computer at home to work in stead of working outside. Such as students course, people can stay at home and submit their work online when they done.

Twitter: Discussion

Before I register a twitter, I think this is unnecessary since I already have facebook.
Now, I feel use twitter very fun, looks like playing text message. I can search the newest events, and send it to my friends. You can see what is your friends doing right now, and rely it as soon as possible. Although People update very frequency, but if their tweet attractive to people, they will still following them.
How does twitter discussion compare to Bb discussion? To an in-class discussion?
The similarity between twitter and Bb discussion is both of them use character limit, and make them simple. Only let users to rely to the posts. The difference between twitter and in-class discussion is that Bb discussion Board allows members of the class to communicate with one another while not requiring all members to be online at the same time, and limit to people to see the posts. Twitter’s tweet can let everyone see your post, and everyone can be your followers. you also can rely anyone's tweets. very interesting.

Social Networking

Social Networking has affect society in so many ways and within so many areas. Depending on what area an individual is most expose to, he/she will know what kinds of Social Networking has impact their lives. Social Networking provides people faster way to have a communication. For example, a lot of marketers use the Social Networking to promotion their products, and through their friends to let other people know their products. People benefit because more useful social experiences can be open to them. Such as Social Networking provide people a new way to do an advertisement by email, banner, ucc video clip; people are able to easy to gather a wide and variety information via internet; people are able to have collaboration the work via web based technology which is wiki; people also are able to communicate not only from local people but also people from all over the world.; beside of those, people can shopping on line and gather more information about products and purchase the products via online shopping sites. On the other hand, Social Networking also have “Dark Side”, for instance, violation of a privacy, such as selling personal information; people are easy to copy and share the information by messengers, web pages, and etc…when new technology innovated, it always has a positive and negative effect. According to the article, "Social Networking Technology boosts job recruiting" by Frank Langfitt, social networking helps people to find jobs, like Linkedin. He can just post his information on the Social Networking sites and wait for notification. We are at the transition period that the new media replaced old media. While New Media provide people many positive effects and it help to improve high quality of life, it also give us the assignment.

Checking Out Some Social Networking Sites

The 4 Social networking sites that I checked out were, Facebook, hi5, MySpace, and Friendster. MySpace was the very first social network I joined. My friend told me to join it, so that she could make me "a friend on MySpace". I really got into at one point because it made it easier for me to quickly keep in touch with friends and share photos. And join groups comment on their friends’ profiles or even make new friends. Facebook was mainly created for college students, but it was quickly made available to anyone who had an e-mail address. MySpace and Facebook are two very similar sites, but they are both very popular for a good reason, because it they are so addicting! I'm sure many students waste countless hours on Facebook while they should be studying! Friendster has been around since 2002 and it is considered to be one of the first social networking sites that got popular. I never had a Friendster account, but i created one a few days ago to check it out. It seems to have similar features to Facebook and Myspace. I used hi5 because my friends tell me to use it.

Blogs vs. Wikis

Both blogs and wikis have a huge role in the importance of new media, and both are social networking. For wikis, we can change the information that we post on the website. We can change on what other says. Other people can change on what we say. Wikis is more about the fact than personal stuff. For blogs, it’s more private. We can post whatever we want into our own blogs. Other people can only view and leave their comments in the blog. I can lock my blog with my password and only my friend can see it.
Convergence is very important in today’s networked world. Communication is essential in today's world, and nowadays with technological convergence, it has become easier for people to communicate with others. People are able to access to the webpage, blog and wiki, to collect and exchange the information, people can share, communicate with people from all over the world. The information could be delivered to all over the world immediately.
Collaborative blogs are becoming more and more popular. Blogs can be used to share files, pictures, and even movies. Somebody can leave comments on your post, or you can follow somebody's blog. Also, blogs can be used for collaboration among group project or team work.
There have the new feature, called “flagged revision”, that from the “Wikipedia to Limit changes to Articles on People” by Noam Cohen, this article related to wiki, people can providing sources for facts, then edit to wiki. However, any type of thing for sharing ideas and performing collaborative assignments, wikis should be able to do.

Old vs. New

We distinguish new media from old media by how easily the information can be processed, change and interpret that information. Old Media are things such as television, radio, and newspapers. If you want to know the news, you would have to wait for the newspaper to come out or wait till morning or evening for to watch the news on television. If you want to listen to music, you have to buy CDs. But New Media is the opposite. My space, wiki, and facebook are examples of New Media, such as blogs and newspaper websites allow you to read your cities news wherever you are, as long as you are connected to the internet. New Media also can download the music from the website. If you think a post on a blog is a good read, you can post a comment. If you think a video on YouTube is terrible, you can post your opinion. New Media gives everyone who wants to express themselves a voice to do so.

What is new media?

New Media is an evolution from Old Media. New media also called social media; the new media are internet-based (Web 2.0) technologies that collectively are characterized by the 5 c's: communication, collaboration, community, creativity, and convergence. Wiki's, Blogs, Face book, MySpace, etc. These are examples of the types of new media that is popular right now. The difference between Old Media and New Media is that newspapers and magazines are all turned paperless, we can now go onto the internet and we are able to read from there.
New Media is easy and fast to use than the Old Media. Based on the article, “Who Needs a TV? I’m Watching on a Laptop,” people begin to watch TV on their laptops instead of television. New Media is mainly connected with network. People go online to download songs, watch dramas, chatting with others, doing research, and so on. New media make people feel more convenience. People can easy to carry them to travel around such as ipod instead of walkman; laptop instead of desktop; an electronic dictionary instead of a cover paper dictionary; digital camera instead of general camera; etc.

Wow!!!

This is my first blog, i never used it before. So exciting!
